Jared Campbell asks: Getting ready to wire up my xi5 trolling motor and had a couple of questions. I decided to run all new 6 gauge wiring. The problem is most plugs I see out there are prewired with 10 gauge. The wire coming out of the motor is also 10 gauge.

Can I use plugs with 10 gauge or should I try to keep it 6 gauge as much as possible?

Thanks in advance.

What plug are you using? The best out there is battery tender and you attach your wire to it via ring terminals you put in the wire.

thanks for the feedback! Does anyone know if there is a big difference between the “marine grade” connectors they sell at West Marine or the ones at Home Depot? WM has the 6AWG connectors for 4 dollars for 1 connector. Home depot is 4 dollars for a pack of 5. Was hoping not to spend $50 on connectors.

Yes length is a factor in determining wire size, however no matter length 10 gauge can carry no more than 30amps.

Depends on how long your run is
